Essential Mechanical Fundamentals
- Blueprint and Process Interpretation: Ability to read mechanical machining drawings; understand specifications for limits and fits, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and surface roughness; and complete part machining in strict accordance with process requirements.
- Measuring Tool Proficiency: Skilled operation of common measuring tools such as vernier calipers, micrometers, and thread gauges; knowledge of tool maintenance; and the ability to accurately measure workpiece dimensions.
- Material and Cutting Tool Knowledge: Understanding the cutting characteristics of common metals; mastering the selection of turning tool angles and sharpening techniques; and the ability to optimize tool parameters based on specific machining scenarios.
Core Operational Skills
- Conventional Lathe Operation: Familiarity with lathe structure, drive systems, and lubrication points; ability to independently handle workpiece clamping, tool adjustment, and cutting parameter settings; and mastery of techniques for turning typical features such as cylindrical surfaces, conical surfaces, and threads.
- CNC Lathe Specialized Skills: Proficiency in programming commands (G-codes, M-codes, etc.); ability to independently write simple machining programs, debug programs via simulation, and execute automated machining of high-precision parts.
- Handling Complex Machining Conditions: Ability to resolve common machining challenges-such as vibration during the turning of slender shafts or chatter during deep-hole machining-and ensure machining accuracy by adjusting tooling and process parameters.
