Building on previous discussions about learning lathe operation, the basic tools a beginner needs can be categorized into four main groups, covering all requirements for daily practice:
Basic Cutting Tools
- Standard Lathe Tools: 90° external turning tools, 45° facing tools, parting-off tools, and internal boring tools. These are the core cutting tools used for machining external diameters, end faces, grooving/parting, and internal bores, respectively.
- Auxiliary Cutting Tools: Center drills and twist drills. These are used to create locating center holes and pilot holes in the workpiece, meeting basic hole-machining needs.
Precision Measuring Tools
- Basic Measuring Tools: 0–150mm vernier caliper (0.02mm precision). Capable of measuring internal/external diameters and depths, this is the most frequently used tool for daily tasks.
- High-Precision Measuring Tools: 0–25mm and 25–50mm outside micrometers (0.01mm precision). Used to ensure dimensional accuracy for precision-machined parts.
- Auxiliary Measuring Tools: Dial indicator. Used to check workpiece runout and align the workpiece position, ensuring clamping accuracy.
Clamping and Fastening Tools
- Chuck and Tool Post Wrenches: Used to tighten the chuck (securing the workpiece) and lock the lathe tool in place. These must be removed immediately after use to prevent safety hazards.
- Auxiliary Fixtures: Lathe centers and copper shims. Centers support long, shaft-like workpieces, while copper shims placed on the chuck jaws protect machined surfaces from clamping damage.
Auxiliary Support Tools
- Daily Maintenance Tools: Oilstones and files. Used to remove burrs, touch up cutting edges, and clean up machining marks on the workpiece surface.
