What Are The Three Major Components Of A Lathe?

Based on the previously described complete structure of a lathe, the three core components recognized within the industry are the bed, the headstock, and the tailstock. These three elements are essential for ensuring the lathe's basic functionality and machining precision:

 

Bed: Serving as the foundational structural framework, it supports all other components. It relies on high-precision guideways to maintain the positional accuracy of various assemblies and acts as the primary carrier of the machine's overall rigidity.


Headstock: Housing the spindle and the speed-change mechanism, it directly drives the workpiece to rotate, thereby generating the primary cutting motion. It determines the lathe's cutting power and rotational speed range, serving as the power core for the turning process.


Tailstock: Capable of moving along the bed's guideways, it performs two key functions: using a center to support long workpieces-preventing bending or deformation during machining-and accommodating tools such as drill bits or reamers for hole-making operations. It is a critical component for ensuring stability when machining long, shaft-like parts.
